Registration
How can I register for Lower Mac Football in 2012?
The Lower Macungie Youth Association handles registration for Football. You can register online at www.lmya.org from May 1-July 15. LMYA has more registration details on their website.
Is my child eligible to play?
Lower Mac Football is a youth program open to any child between the ages 5-13 years old (generally, grades 1-7.) There are also weight limits for all tackle football teams, please see below.
How do I register my child for the correct team? What if I register for the wrong team?
We have details for the different teams and weight levels below. In general, register for the team which your child is age eligible. If you know your child will not make weight for that team, you can register for the team which your child will qualify. Nothing done during registration is permanent - the coaching staff will review rosters to ensure players are properly rostered prior to the season, and even then we have time before submitting official rosters to the league.
Are there tryouts? Will my child definitely make the team?
Every child that registers by July 15 will earn a spot on the appropriate roster.
How much does it cost to play?
Registration fees are determined by LMYA. For 2012, the fee for Micro flags is $55, Flag football is $125, and all tackle levels are $155. The registration fees cover almost all equipment necessary to play, including game uniforms, practice uniforms, all pads including shoulder pads, mouthpieces, and helmets. You will need to provide cleats.
Is there any required fundraising?
No. We do not participate in any organized fundraising and do not require any of our players or families to participate in fundraising for the program.
What if football isn’t the right sport for my child? What is the refund policy?
Every player has a full week of practice to decide if they want to participate, and LMYA will refund the registration fee for any player until that time, minus $30 which is not refundable. Registration is final beginning the first practice of the second week (August 13.)
How long does the season run?
The season begins August 1 and runs until mid-November.
League
What league does Lower Mac play in?
We play in the Suburban Youth Football League against teams from across the Lehigh Valley.
When are the games? Is there a lot of travel time?
Games are usually played on Saturdays in the Fall, and occasionally on Sundays. Check our website for the most up to date schedule. All of our games are in the Lehigh Valley and within 30-40 minutes of Lower Macungie. Our website has links and directions to all of our scheduled opponents.
Teams/Levels
We get a lot of questions about the different teams in the program and how each one is organized. How competitive is it? How much of a time commitment should I expect? The LMYA Football Coordinator has full discretion to administer the program through the 2012 coaching staff. Here is a summary of each of the program levels and the guidelines used by our coaches.
In 2012, we will field teams at 6 different levels. The overall goal across all levels is to teach Lower Mac youth the fundamentals of football and to teach them good sportsmanship, discipline, and teamwork. Here is a description of each level:
Instructional Levels
Micro Flags - A completely instructional flag football level for the youngest kids in the Lower Mac program. This level is ideal for children completely new to the sport. Everyone gets to play and there is a limited time commitment. We keep score but there is no emphasis on competitive aspects of the game.
-
Ages 5-7 - players cannot turn 8 years old prior to September 1, 2012
-
Plays in the South Parkland league, not affiliated with SYFL
-
Practice one evening per week
-
One game per week on Saturdays
-
8-on-8 teams, flag football, no tackling
Flag Football - A completely instructional flag football level for the youngest kids in the Lower Mac program. This level is geared towards children that will soon graduate to tackle football, and requires more commitment than the micro flags. Everyone gets to play, and the team does not focus on the competitive aspects of the game. We keep score but there is no emphasis on winning, and we do not keep track of win-loss records.
-
Ages 5-7 - players cannot turn 8 prior to September 1, 2012
-
Participates in the SYFL flag football league
-
Practice 5 times/week in August, 3 times/week once school starts
-
One game per week on Saturdays
-
11-on-11 teams, flag football, no tackling
80 lb. Tackle Football - The 80 lb. team is the first level of tackle football. This is an instructional level focused on teaching children the fundamentals of tackle football. We introduce some competitive aspects of the game at this level late in the season. All players at the 80 lb. level get to play each week during the season. We keep score but there is no emphasis on winning during the season, and we do not keep track of win-loss records. To introduce some of the competitive aspects of football, we play the final game of the season and a postseason tournament with the goal of winning those games.
-
Players cannot turn 9 prior to September 1, 2012
-
Must weigh 80 lbs. or less
-
Participates in the SYFL 80 lb. division
-
Practice 5 times/week in August, 3 times/week once school starts
-
One game per week on Saturdays
-
11-on-11 teams, tackle football with age-appropriate rules (i.e. no fumbles)
Competitive Levels
We have 3 competitive levels - the 95 lb., 110 lb, and 125 lb. teams. These teams compete in the SYFL, keep score and track win-loss records. The SYFL holds playoffs following the regular season for the teams with the best records, and awards championships to the teams that win the playoff tournament at each level. We are still focused on the fundamentals of football and sportsmanship, and we play all games with the goal to win the game. We hold tryouts and evaluations for the first 5-10 practices to help place each player in the role best suited for the team. Coaches do not guarantee playing time for all players in SYFL games, and all players are evaluated throughout the season to earn playing time. We also schedule several “B” games against other SYFL teams to make sure all teammates get to play. The “B” games do not count in the SYFL standings but help make sure all players continue to progress in game situations.
95 lb. Tackle Football - The 95 lb. team is the first level of competitive football. There are some rules modifications for this age level (i.e. no onside kicks.)
-
Players cannot turn 10 prior to September 1, 2012
-
Must weigh 95 lbs. or less
-
Participates in the SYFL 95 lb. division
-
Practice 5 times/week in August, 3 times/week once school starts
-
One game per week on Saturdays
-
11-on-11 teams, tackle football
110 lb. Tackle Football - The 110 lb. team is competitive football for 10-11 year olds. Starting at this level, we play using PIAA high school rules.
-
Players cannot turn 11 prior to June 1, 2012 (not September 1)
-
Exception – Children who turn 11 between Sept 1, 2011–May 31, 2012 who weigh 80 lbs or less are eligible for the 110 lb. team
-
Must weigh 110 lbs. or less
-
Participates in the SYFL 110 lb. division
-
Practice 5 times/week in August, 3 times/week once school starts
-
One game per week on Saturdays
-
11-on-11 teams, tackle football
125 lb. Tackle Football - The 125 lb. team is competitive football for 11-13 year olds. We play using PIAA high school rules.
-
Players cannot turn 13 prior to September 1, 2012
-
Must weigh 125 lbs. or less
-
Participates in the SYFL 125 lb. division
-
Practice 5 times/week in August, 3 times/week once school starts
-
One game per week on Saturdays
-
11-on-11 teams, tackle football
How does the weight limit work? What if my child does not make weight?
Players for all tackle football levels will be weighed approximately 1 hour prior to the start of all SYFL games and must make weight in order to be eligible to play on that day. There are no weight limitations for “B” games, and even players who do not make weight at their level will still get game experience in those games.
Is there a weight allowance during the season?
SYFL allows for a 1 lb. weight allowance for each week, starting in week 4 for the 80, 95, 110, and 125 lb tackle teams. A child must first make the initial starting weight during one of the first three weeks or they will be moved up to the next higher age/weight division for the remainder of the year.
